Learnings from the Striving Together Report
On March 20th, 2008 Strive released the education report, Striving Together: Student Progress on the Roadmap to Success, which presents community level outcome indicators from early learning through college and careers for the urban core of the region. Data is presented for Cincinnati, Covington, and Newport. Below is an excerpt from this report highlighting the outcome indicator found in our Goal 3: SUCCEED academically area.
Student academic success is the core objective of all of the strategies implemented as a part of Strive. Education partners from early childhood through college are committed to establishing high standards for all students and providing a rigorous curriculum that challenges students and prepares them with the skills and knowledge to succeed in the 21st century.
Overall Finding:
It appears that our children are making progress in math and reading achievement; however, many children have not achieved the desired reading or math levels and a gap still exists between local scores and state averages.
Below we highlight the data for Newport Independent Schools, but you can find all three districts' data in the full Striving Together report.
Newport Independent Schools use the Kentucky Core Content Test to assess progress in reading and math. Grade four has been designated as a critical milestone for student progress in reading, representing a shift from learning how to read to reading to learn. Competence in mathematics is essential for functioning in everyday life as well as for success in our increasingly technological workplace. Early assessment in both reading and math is important in order to ensure students are achieving at grade level and to offer interventions to those who are not.
What it Tells Us:
Reading: Fourth grade reading scores indicate an increase from 2004-05 to 2005-06. The gap between the district and the state has narrowed since 2004-05. Seventh grade reading scores are inconsistent and a gap remains between the district and the state average.

Math: Fifth grade math scores increased from 2004-05 through the next two school years. The gap between the district and the state average has narrowed since 2004-05. Eighth grade math scores show an improvement from 2005-06 through 2006-07. Please be aware that the calculation for proficiency changed in 2006-07.
