Regional Data Portal

The Greater Cincinnati Regional Data Portal is a central and sustainable online center to house community data and information on key subject areas including demographics, economy, education, poverty, health, arts, environment, and others.

The Strive Partnership is working with UC, United Way, NKU, Greater Cincinnati Foundation, Health Foundation, Haile/U.S. Bank Foundation and others to create a robust regional community data portal to serve as a central access point for general audiences to access and use data about the community in their own work.

The collaboration is constructing a data portal that will provide a unified gateway to the information distributed by some of the largest data providers in our region. The portal will allow the collaboration to shift their individual resources from a static environment to a dynamic environment that emphasizes user-driven data discovery.

Duties and Resposibilities:

Position Duties and Responsibilities

The duties of the intern will be to help collect, organize, and load data into the developing regional data portal. This person will also work closely with staff from the UC Institute for Policy Research.

Responsibilities include collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting education, demographic, and socio-economic data and indicators from state and national data sources including departments of education, the U.S. Census Bureau, and other data sources.

Responsibilities also include determining appropriate uses of data, assessing and recommending additional data where necessary and overseeing data quality assurance.

Requirements:

The following skills and experiences are a plus
• Experience with data sets from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, American Community Survey, Census, Population Estimates, etc.
• It is a plus if they have used: CDCWonder (health data), DataFerrett (custom calculations for Current Population Survey, ACS and other surveys), IRS data, WISQARS (health data), FactFinder2
• Comfortable using, and writing formulas in, Excel
• Familiarity with state level data (esp. from the Departments of Education and Health)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Low physical effort required to sit, stand at files, bend, stoop, lift, and walk. Maximum unassisted lift = 35lbs. Requires ability to use a keyboard, monitor and calculator. Also requires the ability to communicate verbally, both in person and on the telephone.

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Inside average office environment. Average office noise levels. No personal protective equipment required. Ambient temperature between 68 and 76F.

The internship is a part-time (20-25 hours per week) internship over the summer.
