Find Help When You Need it: Support Services

Few people sail through college without any problems. When you run into a rough spot, you need to know help is out there. You just have to find out where to look, and who to ask. If you can't get help with your term paper or your transportation or your tight budget, keep asking: persistence pays off.

  1. Manage your time. Find a system that works for you - a big calendar where you can see it, an electronic planner or a datebook - and use it. Keep in mind what you have to do and when; pace yourself and don't wait until the last minute.
  2. Get money under control. Make a realistic budget, including fun money, and stick with it. See the "Paying for College" section in this website.
  3. Improve your communication. Work toward writing and speaking better and learn as many computer skills as you can.
  4. Try out events and classes that are unfamiliar to you. Get to know people around you. It's your chance to expand your life.
  5. Take care of your health. Eat healthy food, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly.
  6. Find out what your college has to offer and use it - whether it's gardens, pools, libraries, clinics, multimedia labs, help groups, or career advisors.
  7. Make college your own. Choose your classes carefully; go to class and ask questions, do the work, talk with the instructor.
  8. If you fall behind, ask for help. Go to instructors, advisors, friends, or family. Figure out a plan to get back on track and stick with it.
  9. Stay in touch with friends and family. You want someone to count on if life gets rough.
  10. Keep work and fun in balance.
