Skills for your lifetime
What skills are employers looking for? A survey by the U.S. Department of Labor asked that very question and came up with the list below. You'll learn some of these skills in high school, but chances are you'll have to find ways to develop some of them on your own. Anything you can do to polish these skills will help in college, on the job, and even in every day life.
Foundation Skills
- Basics: Read, write, calculate mathematically, listen and speak well.
- Thinking: Think creatively, make decisions, solve problems, visualize, know how to learn and how to reason.
- Personal Qualities: Be responsible, develop your self-esteem, manage your emotions, be honest.
Job Success Skills
- Organize and plan resources, including time, money, materials, and people.
- Work well with other people.
- Acquire and use information well.
- Understand the inter-relationships in organizations and technological systems.
- Be able to work with a variety of technologies.
