Project Manager of Policy and Partnerships

Jonathan Joseph is the project manager of policy and partnerships for StriveTogether.

Jonathan is a born and bred North Carolinian who carries the state motto, “to be rather than to seem,” deeply to heart. Jonathan knows firsthand how federal, state, and local level policies impact people and communities every day. During his undergraduate studies at Appalachian State University, Jonathan was a Federal Pell Grant recipient and accepted the UNC Need-Based Grant where he earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and sociology. His passion for asset-based community development and public policy led him to pursue and earn a master’s degree in community development and public policy at Vanderbilt University where he was a Dean’s Tuition Scholar recipient.

Graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic, he saw firsthand how systems and institutions were not prepared for the events of 2020 and how it, disproportionately, affected working-class and BIPOC communities across the country. Jonathan is committed to building back better with StriveTogether’s core value of equity. In his position, he will work tirelessly managing the policy and partnerships execution of the Equitable Recovery Pledge to achieve a more just future for our children, youth, and families across the nation.

What is a place that shaped you, and how does it give you purpose?

The people, place, and history of both Raleigh and North Carolina have shaped me into who I am today. Raleigh, North Carolina, has such rich history in social justice, from the abolition movement of slavery to the civil rights movement of the present day. People from all over the state come to Raleigh to make their voices heard and make the state better. As James Baldwin once said, “People are trapped in history, and history is trapped in them.”
